Tahitian Pearls: Their Cultivation, Colour and Charm
The elegant white gems or pearls have been drawing the temptation of men from several years. The importance showered upon them by the Egyptian princess and European royals, continues till today. With changes in time, the white pearls eventually lost their elegance to the black pearls, which has emerged as a new love for jewelry connoisseurs. The pearl necklaces are rare, rich and black. These Tahitian pearls which are ferociously used for designing pearl jewelry, is cultivated in a very large saltwater lagoon for two years. The interior colour of the shell of this mollusk is dark. Since, its mantle edges are black in colour; it is also called as black lipped oysters. In the entire pearl growing process, these pearls need a stable and secure environment.
Nowadays, the most craved colour of Tahitian pearls for pearl jewelry designing are blue gray and dark green grey. The colour of the pearls depends on various factors like the growing environment, thickness of the nacre layer, the temperature. These black pearls, which are round and of gem quality, have expensive prices. The excess price is also on account of the rarity of round pearls. But the cost factor has not hindered the popularity of these gems. Right from renowned Hollywood actresses to house wives, everyone craves for these magical black pearls. Even designers like Paloma Picassso, Elsa Peretti and David Yurman incorporate these stunning black pearls in chokers, necklaces, brooches and charming bracelets.
Some of the famous and elegant designs of the black pearls are single ring of a black pearl, black baroque, stud earrings in black, pendants with black pearls. Though, the freshwater cultured black pearls can be as similar to the original Tahitian pearls. But it lacks in terms of durability, quality and lustre. Though, it’s better for casual wear and suits the needs of the customers who cannot afford the expensive natural ones. Thus, the pearl industry is on an elevation. After all, Tahitian pears cannot be compared by other varieties, for years to come.
