Can real silver stretch?
I was playing/rough-housing with my dog the other day and i lent forward, meaning my necklace was hanging from my neck, as i lent over my dog jumped up getting her paw caught in the chain. As she pulled down so did the chain and since the chain was clipped around my neck it seemed to stretch when it got pulled as now it is longer than what it was and fits round my head without me unclipping the clip to put it on.
I got this necklace from my Grandma for Christmas and i really like it. She told me it was real silver. Can real silver stretch?
Silver is an extremely malleable metal. That means it bends easily. Your necklace stretched but the silver did not. The links in the chain were elongated by the pull which means they were bent a little out of shape, possibly each and every one of them. If your necklace had merely been silver plaited it would not have done that.
Good news: necklace very likely high content of silver.
Bad news: necklace now a slightly different shape than before.
I don’t know if there is any easy fix if you wanted one as it would take a jeweller/gemologist a long time and some tedious moments to put it back into the original shape for you.
