Toggling the initial state of a checkbox in html ?
I have created a web page based quest/mission checklist for Guild Wars (using Frontpage 2003) that I want users to be able to use internally on their own pc’s to keep track of completed quests/missions, etc. I need the page to retain the status of each checkbox & display it exactly as it appeared the last time the page was used. Since there is no information that needs to be viewed other than the page itself, I am trying to avoid submitting info to extarnal databases. And, since this info could be kept for months or years, I would like to avoid using cookies that could accidently be deleted, resetting all checkboxes to unchecked.
Is there a script or toggle command that would basically edit the initial state of a checkbox between unchecked & checked when the checbox is clicked on? I guess this would be allowing the user to edit the page itself, but it seems like it would be the best solution if it can be done.
You cannot retain information about a per-visitor setting without something on the server to do the retaining, either a database or flat-text file.
Even making a web page “editable” (which would be the biggest mis-… *second* biggest mistake you’ll make in your career of hosting this site) requires actual server-side actions/scripting.
If your host supports FrontPage Extensions, you can use ASP, for example. But PHP is another option.
*Especially* if you want to keep data for years, you cannot do without something on the server. Cookies expire, browsers change, but a well-written (and simple database) can be migrated and updated without ever losing your information.
(Your single biggest mistake is that you’re using FrontPage, by the way… get a real Web Editor that creates acceptable HTML code, like Visual Web Developer Express, or NVU… sorry, it had to be said.)
