Crafty Baby Boomer Creates Booming Business
His unexpected success transformed a hobby into an early retirement. He never suspected that his life would have a surprise ending.
He felt the lure of hand crafted items his entire life. He was always interested in how people used skills like his as a metal fabricator and woodworker to make custom objects.
He acquired a pair of sleigh beds from a collector who specialized in furniture. The French daybeds made in the early 1800 era were normally made for one individual.
He liked the flow of the crown rolls and the way they could be fashioned to roll inward or outward. The head and foot boards were distinctive due to the rolled tops and that captivated his attention.
Craftsmen made their beds to resemble a horse-drawn sleigh. He began working on his first queen sleigh bed for his wife.
His next project was a king sleigh bed for a neighbor. It took many hours to produce just one unit.
He tinkered in his shop with various materials like heavy steel and light weight aluminum. He even used wood and metal together in different ways.
He was able to make standard beds after gaining more experience and confidence. He concentrated on the appearance of the headboards and the foot piece. His goal was too create intensely artistic end portions.
This allowed him to concentrate on unique end pieces that could not be duplicated by mass producers. This became his niche.
His unadvertised beds gained popularity and received kudos in the local daily paper. The article featuring his beds and his unique decorative appointments was also posted online.
The article was seen by a cable television home show producer who did a small segment on his distinctive decorative features. That exposure led to an overwhelming interest by consumers.
A couple of talented assistants help him with ornate styling on both ends of the beds. The basic models are fashioned by six experienced employees. Each of them has a long record of working with custom wood products.
His matchless creations reflect his personal vision and suggestions from his clients. No one else will have a copy of their bed and each one fetches a price that values their exceptional quality.
He leveraged his skill, knowledge, and enthusiasm into a profitable venture that allows his employees to earn a better than average wage.
He is proud of the money he keeps in circulation by transacting with local suppliers. He commutes to work in his boots from the house to the shop. His days of traffic jams are in his gone as he goes full speed down the freeway of financial freedom.
