Hollywood Seriously Investigating Rubik’s Cube License
30 Years after its original release, the Rubik’s Cube, the puzzle toy that reminds us of 80s childhoods and things being thrown hard against walls is getting a whole lot of renewed attention. With 350 million frustration cubes sold worldwide, there’s suddenly attention on the toy for a bizarre reason. Whereas the Rubik’s cube has been licensed to many companies in the past, particularly manufacturers of Branded Merchandise, the rumour spilling from entertainment websites is that the Rubik’s cube license will be used in an upcoming movie project.
Yup, I’m totally serious.
Hollywood insiders claim that talent agency CAA have been approaching studios to sell off the license for a lucrative price. CAA actually have a lot of credability behind them: the represent George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. Shame the storylines being vomited out of their Branded pens aren’t exactly reversing the bad taste the strange license leaves in the mouth: with the prospect of an Erno Rubik biography seeming about as exciting as hairdrying wet paint, current concepts include the uninspired idea of a ‘Rubik’s cube tournament’. As much as we’d all want to see a Karate Kid-ripoff with a troubled youngster fighting against the unconventional tactics of an underhand Rubik’s Dojo (basically, they peel the stickers off), that’s probably not going to happen. Or better still, a Saturday Night Fever period piece with John Travolta dancing on a giant disco Rubik’s cube. I guarantee it’ll be better than Battlefield Earth.
Rubik’s Revenge II: Attack of the Cubes won’t even be the stupidest movie license to be bought up by Hollywood. Rights to pill-popping pie-chart Pac-Man were purchased by Crystal Sky in 2008, though no movie ever actually surfaced. Hollywood clearly needs a shake-up. They’re obsessed with the ‘brand’, no longer content with promotional clothing sales: the movie must carry a merchandisable name itself.
