Training to become a Marine in South Wales
Friday evening of the PRMC we all met up at the Detachment. Spirits were high, but there were a lot of nerves in. 7 lads (including me) would be taking part in the testing. We were then going to be going to Bristol to collect approx 40 additional recruits. We left Cardiff at 1930 and finally got to Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTC RM), Lympstone sometime after 2200. We grabbed our kit and taken the drill shed, where there were another 20 or so recruits. Once the roll call had been taken we were allocated our teams for the weekend and given our kit (sleeping bag, bib and combat smock). By now it was about 2330, having had a day at work I was shattered and was just thinking about my bed. We finally got taken to the accommodation block (16 man dorms with bunks), but this wasn’t the end of the night. We still had a welcome lecture to attend. Eventually at 1230 we got down time. I had managed to find myself a bottom bunk but was unable to sleep. Everyone was hyper and organising kit for the morning making sure that everything was ready for the 0530 wake up call.
We finally started falling asleep about 0130 and before we knew it, it was 0530. It was a quick sprint to showers (to get closer to the front of the queue) and then a shave. Once personal admin was squared away it was time to start on the dorm. It needed to be swept, mopped and squeegeed. Once that was finished it was about 0630 and time for breakfast.
