I have 4 rats. Seek title for genders. No, I’m not breeding. I had my two boys and then saw these little ladies on Craigslist and said they didn’t mind them being snake food. Couldnt’ let that be.
Anyway. I wanted to know if when my females aren’t in heat, can they play? I know it’s every 4 days. The males are 5 months and 9 weeks. I know Remmy can reproduce, not sure on clue. The girls are 7 months, sisters.
Boys: Remington, or Remmy and Clue registered under Imago Clueless.
Girls: Maiyu and No name (thinking of names, don’t know)
The girls have name! Bailey is a fawn hooded and Maiyu is the black hooded, or varrigated, not sure which.
Male rats can impregnate female rats as early as 5 weeks old. So you should definitely not let them play together after they are 4 weeks old (just to be safe). It takes only a few seconds for a male to impregnate a female. No, they can’t be together for even a second, because that’s literally how long it takes for her to get pregnant. You will have to keep the male rats far away from the female, like one cage upstairs, the other downstairs so that they can’t smell each other, else, the female will be distressed while she’s in heat, because she can’t get to the males. As for the male rats, yes, they will fight each other if they smell the female. You will have to wash your hands and clothing after touching either, or the smells will be passed by you. Females are always ready to breed and mate. When they are in heat, the female acts different and gives off the smell that she is ready to mate. Males will want mate with her more and she will want to mate more at that time but it doesn’t matter. In teh wild, rats have their own territories. A male rat will only go t ofemales when they are in heat and they will travel great distances.
If you have a local vet that deals with rats, get the males neutered so once they’re healed, they can live together without problems.
