The Urgent Reality About Adoption And Foster Care
First point – The children in foster care in the US alone number about half a million give or take a few tens of thousands. All over the world the population of similarly situated kids must be in the tens of millions. Of the children in the US, a fourth have been legally separated from their parents and are likely to end up orphans for the rest of their lives unless adopted.
Second point – When these children have grown to 18 years of age, they are no longer eligible for foster care. Unless their foster parents adopt them, they are sent away in disappointment. What sort of life awaits them out there, given that they may not have had enough guidance during their years in foster care is a big question mark.
Third point – Comparing adoption and foster care, the possibility of transferring from family to family in foster care due to the non-permanent nature of the foster relationship is something that becomes reality for these children all too often. That experience can be detrimental to the psychological stability of these children since with each new parent, they may have to adapt to different temperaments and viewpoints. As a result, these children sometime lose their sense of identity.
Comparing adoption and foster care, you should know that the existing system for funding children in foster care reflects the preference of society for adoption. It has weaknesses and defects. The result is that foster children are often deprived of what they need to fully develop into intelligent, balanced personalities.
Fourth point – America’s mean population per family has declined from 1940 to 2007. In 1940 there were 3.76 persons in each family of the 26 million existing then. Today we have 3.13 persons per family for every one of the 60 millions families on record.
In 1940 there were 97,760,000 (3.76 x 26 million) people living in families in the US. In 1970 that figure went up to 187,800,000 (3.13 x 60 million). The difference between them is 11,960,000.
On the other hand the difference between the number of families in 2007 and 1940 is 60 million – 26 million or 34 million. Assuming that all those families have 2 parents, we would have 68 million more parents in the US now than in 1940.
Superficially viewing the statistics, we would be tempted to conclude that America in 2007 with its new family population of 11,960,000 has no new children because the new parents population is 38 million.
Of course, that is not true and there are many more factors that have to be considered in interpreting those statistics. For instance, not all families have two parents. One thing is suggestive though; the drop in the number of registered children seems to indicate that the deficit has now gone into the ranks of unregistered and family-less kids.
Fifth fact – Between adoption and foster care, adoption is greatly favored. The impermanent nature of foster care is not conducive for the normal growth and maturing of kids. To encourage people to adopt, several subsidies have been granted to them. The cost of the home studies and the various fees preceding the adoption itself are included in those funds. Additionally, there are also some post-adoption funds available.
