The history
Patek Philippe & Co is a Swiss watchmaker of the highest quality. Although founded in 1851, the long history of this luxury watch company actually began in 1833 when a brave soldier and watchmaker by the name of Antoni Norbert de Patek was forced to flee his home in Poland after fighting for freedom in the Polish rebellion against Russia. Patek settled in Switzerland and soon began his long and illustrious career as the maker of luxury timepieces.
In 1845 Patek met up with fellow Swiss watchmaker and the creator of the keyless winding mechanism, Adrien Philippe and the company Patek Philippe makers of Swiss watches was born. In 1868 they made their first wrist watch and the rest as they say is history.
Fortune and Prestige
In 1857 Queen Victoria purchased a Patek Philippe watch. The watch was a pendent style that was suspended from a diamond and enamel brooch and required a key to wind. The watch was a breathtaking work of art and Patek Philippe became a favorite with the royal court.
The luxury watches of Patek Philippe have enjoyed the popularity of kings and queens, sultans and popes. The list includes Hussein Kamel who was Sultan of Egypt from 1914 to 1918, Christian IX and Louise the King and Queen of Denmark, Victor-Emanuel III the King of Italy and Popes PiusIX and Leo XIII to name but a few of the prestigious clients of this simple Swiss watchmaker.
The fame
Patek Philippe &Co have sold not one but three watches that broke records for the most expensive watches ever sold. Each one functional pieces of art in its own right and worthy of the attention and prices paid for them.
In 1933 a watch named the Supercomplication was created by Patek Philippe & Co for Henry Graves. The pocket watch was a remarkably complicated piece of Swiss watch technology for its time and had a total of 24 functions! When Mr. Graves passed away the watch was auctioned off by famed auction house, Sotheby’s for $11,000,000. The timepiece entered the world history books as the most expensive watch ever sold.
In 2008, a watch also created by Patek Philippe &co, Sky Moon Tourbillon, took the stage and sold at Hong Kong Sotheby’s for $1.49 million dollars.
And again in 2010 a timepiece made in 1943 was sold by Christie’s in Geneva for $5.50 million dollars. The Swiss watch that was sold was made of gold and was a chronograph wristwatch featuring a perpetual colander and moon phase display.
Technology
Patek Philippe &Co, like other Swiss watchmakers is known for precision mechanical movement timepieces of both the mechanical and automatic variety. They are also known for pioneering work in the creation of the perpetual colander, split second hand, chronograph and minute repeater.
