Have We Gone Too Far with the Giant Earring Thing?
Two years ago it was giant sunglasses – nowadays its supersized earrings. On catwalks and red carpets everywhere you can’t avoid seeing celebrities like Kate Beckinsale, Kate Winslett or Michelle Obama, sporting elaborate pairs of earrings that dangle far below the jawline.
Now doctors have decided to speak out about this growing trend, warning that they can cause permanent damage to your earlobes. There has been a worrying rise in the number of people needing severe cosmetic surgery to fix torn and damaged earlobes.It appears our ears dont agree with us hanging blinged up miniature dumbells off the end of them!No kidding!
But this warning, despite garnering a lot of news coverage, isn’t going to change anything in the fashion world. I hardly think that the danger of maybe one day needing cosmetic surgery to fix your ear is going to put off the celebrity trend setters. High flying celebrities all have their own personal cosmetic surgeons anyway. Anyway, their enormous bank balances aren’t exactly going to notice the cost of surgery. They will still show up on TV and in glossy magazines with supersized designer 7-inch drop chandeliers with saltwater pearls. And, as long as they do, young girls will keep following the fashion and buy cut price and exaggerated versions in high street jewelers. If anything, the controversy is likely to make them even more popular with rebellious teens as they gain notoriety.
The extreme side of all this is the fashion for “lobe stretching” amongst rebellious teens both male and female.You might have guessed from the name that this practice actually sets out to squeeze and pull your piercing using progressively larger “plugs”.What you end up with is an enormous ring of loose flesh hanging off your ear. Now I’m not trying to be a disapproving grandma on this – each to their own. But what if you change your mind ten years down the line? You end up with permanent harm done to your ears, and most people won’t have the means to get them “fixed”!
I reckon this is all going to come back and bite us in the proverbial behind when we look back on it.Might we one day be cringing with embarassment at all the deformed earlobes and wondering why we ever went there? Will these monstrous ear adornments end up in the same fashion dustbin as neon leotards and mullets? Personally I’d rather look back and laugh at it MINUS the permanent scarring, thank you very much. I think I’ll stick to my penchant for modest pearl jewellery and grow old gracefully.
