Five Easy Steps To Eliminate Dog Bladder Crystals
Dog bladder crystals are fairly common. While the statistics are all over the map a ball park estimate would be about 1 out of every four dogs will experience dog bladder crystals at some point in their lives. For some breeds such as Bulldogs, Dachshunds, Dalmatians, Schnauzers, and Shih Tzu the numbers are even higher settling at about four out of every ten.
As you probably already known dog bladder crystals are excreted through urination. The initial reaction of most pet owners is not to believe they have found precious stones rather it is shock. After all if a person has never seen or heard of a dog bladder crystal it can be quite unsettling.
Dog bladder crystals are actually tiny accumulations of natural occurring minerals that have clumped together. The most common type of mineral accumulation is that of magnesium ammonia phosphate. There are other less common varieties including calcium oxalate (primarily seen in male dogs) and uric acid formations (often seen in Dalmatians). But whatever the composition of a dog bladder crystal the fact of the matter is that a dog bladder crystal is often a warning sign of either an underlying problem or an impending problem and steps should be taken to eliminate them as soon as possible.
Your dog will likely not show any symptoms thus giving most pet owners a false sense that there is nothing to worry about. But keep in mind that these tiny crystals are actually miniature forms of bladder stones and if preventative step aren’t taken can become larger and more serious over time.
So let’s walk through a five simple steps you can take at home to make sure that these tiny dog bladder crystals don’t turn into something more ominous.
*Water: If you have read a number of my pet health articles you may have noticed that I tend to list water first most of the time. This is not by accident. When it comes to conditions involving urinary tract health above average water intake is important to keep bacteria from thriving, minerals from accumulating, and urinary ph levels balanced. All three of the above examples can contribute or be the direct cause of dog bladder crystals or stones.
*Diet: Remember stones generally contain magnesium and/or calcium so reducing magnesium and to a lesser degree calcium intake is very important. There are a number of pet foods on the market with reduced levels of magnesium that also contain a dog bladder crystal/stone acidifier (L-methionine). Some experts believe that natural acidifiers such as cranberry juice or apple cider vinegar are a safer alternative treatment instead of methionine. Also, table scraps tend to be high in protein and magnesium and should be eliminated at least until the condition has disappeared.
*Exercise: Studies show that inactive dogs are more likely to form urinary crystals. So keep your pet active.
*Reduce stress: Some recent research suggests that stress may be a contributing factor to dog bladder crystals.
*Herbal supplements: Herbal supplements containing uva ursi are a very effective way of promoting urinary tract health and are an affordable option worth considering.
In summary, keeping the water flowing, making a few diet modifications, keeping your pet active, reducing stress levels, and implementing a herbal supplement for urinary tract health will give you a head start in eliminating dog bladder crystals. You should begin to see results in a week or ten days. If for some reason this condition doesn’t abate in a few weeks a veterinary visit should be considered to investigate the cause and formulate a more comprehensive treatment plan.
