So would you be more wary with a Male practitioner in a setting?
Would you feel safe letting him change your child’s nappy (diaper), take your little Angel (Cherub) to the toilet?
What would make you worry (or be pleased that there is a good role model)?
no young child is an angel
and certainly none is a cherub
but that’s not what you were wanting to talk about it it?!
working as I do in childcare, i can tell you that any child care setting to be fortunate enough to have a male practitioner is blessed beyond measure + i guess has a waiting list!
Over the years, it’s been tough for men in childcare and the guys I’ve worked with are naturally and automatically far more pro-active towards being accountable in their work.
They know they are being judged and doubted so they often don’t even put themselves in the place where they might be thought wrong of.
It’s been a fascinating experience- in the light of a recent unpleasent criminal case here in the UK- to listen to the guys say
“….NOW you now why we’ve been asking for this or that as Good Practice for so long…”
Certainly I’ve seen a very big change in the way we approach changing time….ie lets have one person changing while another person supervises washing hands…or something else.
THis wake up call is long overdue
and we could learn from the men on this
( we could also learn from those nurseries where we work under camera….)
