Valentine’s Day Roses
Although there is no factual information about Valentine’s Day, legend says that St. Valentine was martyred in 269 A.D. According to lore, he was a priest who lived in Rome during the reign of the Emperor Claudius. Claudius allegedly ordered young men to stay single in order to grow his army. He felt that married men did not make good soldiers.
St. Valentine did not agree with this law and decided to continue performing marriage ceremonies in secret. During one ceremony soldiers discovered this and threw him in jail. He was to be punished by death.
While in jail, St. Valentine exchanged messages with the daughter of one his jailer’s. On February 14th, the day he was to be executed, he left a note to her thanking her for her friendship and signed it ‘Love from your Valentine’, thus, the tradition of exchanging Valentines.
Following are a few traditions that have led to the modern day Valentine’s exchange.
- During the Middle Ages, young people drew names to find out their valentine. The names they drew would be worn on their sleeve for a week. To “wear your heart on your sleeve” now means it is easy for others to know your feelings.
- Love seats were first made to allow women to be able to sit in a wide dress. Later the seat had two sections and was often S-shaped, allowing couples to sit together.
- It was believed by some long ago that on Valentine’s Day if a woman saw a robin flying overhead, she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man but be happy. If she saw a goldfinch, that meant she would marry a millionaire.
- Wooden love spoons were carved in Wales and given as gifts on Valentine’s Day. Key and keyholes and hearts were popular decorations for the spoons, which meant ‘You unlock my heart’.
